functionalist apartment building in the outskirts of Oslo. The project is about stripping back rather than adding. The floor and walls are sanded down to the structural layer, to be left exposed. Materials are added where necessary to create warmth, intimacy and subtly separating spaces. Massive boards of Douglas fir is added directly on top of the structural layer as low platforms for the more intimate functions of the house. The apartment building is constructed in concrete with load bearing slabs and shear walls. The apartment plan is essentially an open plan and the space is very narrow, with the potential quality of being connected to both sides of the building. The new plan enhances the length and sight lines through the house with a generous hall as a connecting space. Light wooden frames with sheets of fiberglass permit daylight to filter into the deep spaces of the plan. A custom kitchen island cast in concrete mediates the space between kitchen and living room. A few place-built furniture pieces are added to create a warm niche in the kitchen, a place to tie your shoes, put your towels etc – constructed in the most direct and simple way possible. The material combination of the house is a composition of natural materials and surfaces, the materials’ own colors, coming together as a balanced whole. attempt to give a generic standard house its own character. The new expression finds itself balancing between the ordinary and quirky, the balanced and fragile. We have been studying Wenche Selmer, Are Vesterlid and Helmer Hofset for this one, searching for a calm expression and simple detailing. The facade composition is ordered and repetetive. Only a few windows are placed outside the system to create particular moments – to capture trailing light along the walls, illuminate the bathroom niche, or frame the view of the mountain ridge of Ulriken from the bedroom.&nbsp;The existing fireplace becomes the nave of the house with large sliding doors subdividing the living spaces. Trondheim Byggeskikkpris 2024! A complete transformation of a historic townhouse from the late 19th century in the center of Trondheim. The project for Livid in Trondheim reveals the structural layers of the existing building, contrary to standard practice. The building is a patchwork of structures having developed over time, including elements in steel, brickwork, concrete and exposed log walls. The project is about revealing and hiding in an attempt to find a balance between an honesty of construction and a reduced framework for the clothing store. The architecture is a collage of the existing surfaces, exposed steel structures, infrastructures and the interior elements. The most important and permanent interventions are not directly related to our original brief, but are a part of the strategy for a robust interior, outlasting the store itself. As much care has gone into designing the system for sprinklers, ventilation ducts and electricityas in the furniture and objects. The existing elements are visibly repaired where necessary and particularly interesting moments are highlighted or enhanced. The installation was later shown during Oslo Art Week / Oslo Runway. The fountain consists of a basin made from lightweight concrete blocks and waterproof bathroom membrane, with a fountain pump that draws water through a stainless steel pipe in a continuous, endless loop. The installation is built from standardized and reused construction materials. These materials are taken out of their usual context—hidden behind plaster, under tiles, or in industrial environments—and elevated into a water sculpture. The project is circular and makes use of recycled materials. No glue or welding has been used to assemble the structure, and the materials (steel pipes, grates, bricks) can be disassembled and reused in other ways. The installation is at once both light and heavy, timeless and temporary. Oslo. One door, two doorways. Inspired by the custom door in Marcel Duchamp’s studio in 11 Rue Larrey. The attic was an underutilized open space for a growing family. The project is about creating room for two small bathrooms, inserted as custom-built furniture/objects in the open space. When the doors are closed, the attic can be experienced in its entirety. The bathrooms subtly divide the rooms into two zones for sleeping and living. Central to the project was the development, in close collaboration with Meling, of a single door leaf engineered to close against two different frames – a functional gesture that also nods to Duchamp’s relaxed spatial economy. To make the most of the limited footprint, we also designed several bespoke stainless steel elements, including a triangular corner sink, integrated light fixtures, and small furniture pieces. By building where the terrain has already been impacted, further disruption of nature is minimised. The architecture acts as a windbreak, creates sheltered outdoor spaces in both sun and shade, and contains rooms that offer both protection and open views. The heart of the project, the courtyard, becomes the natural gathering place for hikers and visitors.The three building volumes evoke associations with traditional West Norwegian farmyards. They are positioned to accommodate existing infrastructure, and respond to the site's topographical, historical, and cultural characteristics. The name "Langsval" is inspired by a specific traditional Norwegian farmhouse typology characterized by a long, often segmented structure linked by a gallery space. The proposal found inspiration in the dark and low roofs of Knut Knutsen and the long lines in the landscape of Sverre Fehn. Smiljan also in the mix.The architecture engages with its surroundings—both the everyday and the spectacular—while introducing new and unexpected architectural moments. city center of Trondheim for Husfliden. Adapting a historic building from the 1800s to house a shop, tailor, textile production, offices and public events.&nbsp; A subtle restoration of the façade, with newer details executed with care and character, once again opening it towards the alley. Replacing vertical circulation and infrastructure to reorganize the plan. The new plan is organized around two staircases and a hall serving as the nave of the house. A simple and robust floor plan designed to adapt to future changes, with care and craft (”flid”) in the finer details. The existing log beam supported by a new concrete column. Marking the center of the building between the two stairs, weaving the old and new together. Building in the mountains requires a conscious approach to the landscape and is a demanding task that calls for a considered and efficient use of resources in both construction and operation. Our proposal “La Maya” form a backdrop for the spectacular landscape and ensure the efficient construction and operation of a self-sufficient building. Located between the Morteratsch and Pers glaciers, with views of the Bernina range, the Chamanna da Boval occupies one of the Alps’ most spectacular sites. The focal point of the proposal is the new terrace, positioned on the foundations of the existing hut. This terrace continues to offer views from the Pers Glacier in the east to the glacier panorama of the Bernina in the south, nestled between large boulders. The new hut is positioned as a backdrop to the terrace. The long, compact volume maximizes southern views while optimizing solar yield through south-facing surfaces. Apart from windows, the entire façade functions as a photovoltaic surface; the 65° angle optimised to increase energy production and allows snow to slide off, ensuring power generation even in winter. The building’s grid structure allows for prefabricated elements transported efficiently by helicopter. Inside, circulation is arranged along corridors with framed views to the east and west. Large ground-floor areas accommodate an efficient restaurant operation, with service spaces and staff rooms above, and guest rooms on the top floor. This creates a form that tapers upwards, its broad base appearing to brace against the forces of nature—expressing its essential role as a shelter. The new project uses construction as an opportunity to restore the landscape: barracks and sheds will be dismantled, their wood repurposed as firewood to avoid helicopter transport; the stone base of the current terrace will fill the old cellar, leaving only a small storage room, and forming the base of the new terrace. The new Chamanna da Boval thus continues the tradition of building in dialogue with its extreme alpine setting—protecting, framing, and celebrating the very landscape that defines it.
